Monmouthshire County Council review 20mph speed limit - What did they conclude?

Monmouthshire Confirms No Reversal of 20mph Limits

Monmouthshire County Council has confirmed that no roads in the county will revert to 30mph, following a detailed review of the Welsh Government’s new 20mph default speed limit. After assessing four key routes—including the B4245 through Magor, Undy and Caldicot, and roads in Abergavenny and Gilwern, the council found none met the criteria for exemption under national guidance.

The decision follows feedback from nearly 1,500 residents and comes after Monmouthshire was among the first counties to pilot the 20mph rollout in 2022. Despite some public frustration, the council concluded that maintaining lower speed limits is crucial for pedestrian and cyclist safety in built-up areas.

While some councils across Wales have opted to reintroduce 30mph zones in certain areas, Monmouthshire joins others in standing firm. The county’s position reflects a commitment to road safety, reduced collisions, and more active travel across its communities.

Councillor Catrin Maby thanked residents for their feedback and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to road safety. While some may have hoped for changes, the decision prioritises safer streets for everyone, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.
